A
32-year-old driver, identified as Samiu, was beaten up and handed over
to men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) by some motorists after
he was involved in an accident at Idu village, on Abuja-Lokoja road.
A witness said the incident happened on Saturday morning at about 8:23 a.m. at Idu bridge, when the Daf truck with registration number AGH 852 SR, being driven by the driver allegedly caused an accident on the bridge.
He said the truck driver, who was suspected to be drunk was speeding when he overtook another truck and forced it to hit a Honda car with registration number FA 929 ABC from behind.
“It was God that saved the occupants of the Honda and another Golf car coming from the other side,” he said.
He said when the truck driver stopped he was dragged out of his truck, in which a small bottle of wine and charms were found in his pocket.
He said the discovery angered other motorists who pounced on him and beat him up before they handed him over to the FRSC officials.
A person inside the truck, simply identified as Florence, who spoke with our reporter at the scene, said she was complaining right from where they took off about the way the driver was drinking while on steering.
“In fact, when we got to a checkpoint before Lokoja, a mobile police even warned him to stop drinking, but he didn’t listen, until he got here to cause this accident, “ she said.
An FRSC official who spoke with our reporter, said the driver would be taken to their Gegu command and he would be tested for alcohol before they would hand him over to the police.
