Breaking: Acting president Osinbajo swears in Onnoghen as 17th CJN

- The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday March 7, inaugurated Justice Walter Onnoghen as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria
- The swearing-in ceremony was conducted inside the council chambers of Aso Rock presidential villa, Abuja with the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; former CJNs members of the Federal Executive Council; Justices of the Supreme Court and his family members present
- Osinbajo also decorated Onnoghen with the second highest national honours of the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger
BREAKING: Onnoghen becomes CJN, gets GCON
Justice Walter Onnoghen on Tuesday, March 7, was inaugurated as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria by acting president Yemi Osinbajo.

Present at the inauguration was the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; former CJNs members of the Federal Executive Council; Justices of the Supreme Court and his family members.
Osinbajo decorated Onnoghen with the second highest national honours of the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger shortly after taking his oath of office.

The acting president said he spoke with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, March 6 and the president sent his good wishes to the CJN.

In his remarks, Onnoghen promised to lead the judiciary and ensure the independence of the arm of government.

He urged all to adhere strictly to the rule of law and solicited the continued cooperation from all the Justices of the Supreme Court.

The Presidency had in February, confirmed that the Acting President had sent Onnoghen’s nomination to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently on extended medical vacation in London had on November 10, 2016 inaugurated Onnoghen as acting CJN following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the attainment of the mandatory 70 years retirement age.
Onnoghen was born in 1950 at Okurike, Biase Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, and was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2005 (12 years ago).

Six People Die As Driver Using Phone Causes Accident

No fewer than 11 persons were "cleared" following the violation of a traffic rule by a driver, which led to a crash on Gusau-Zaria Road, in the Tazame area of Zamfara State. While 6 persons were killed, 5 others, including two children, sustained serious injuries. The collision involved a Honda car and a Gulf car. It was learnt that the driver of the Honda was coming from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, while the other vehicle was heading towards Gusau at about 10.30am on Monday. The Honda driver, who was said to have been engrossed in a conversation on the telephone, lost control of the car and swerved off his lane onto another lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the Gulf. It was gathered that the two drivers and three other occupants of the two cars died on the spot.
